Nasdaq stocks are often seen as barometers of the global technology sector. Founded in 1971, the exchange is notable for its high concentration of technology and innovation companies. Particularly shaken by the Internet bubble at the turn of the 2000s, the Nasdaq nevertheless saw the emergence of giants in the tech sector during its heyday (Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, etc.). Acronym for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, the Nasdaq is a decentralised market, operating entirely electronically. As the first electronic exchange in history and one of the pioneers of online share trading, Nasdaq is at the forefront of technological and financial innovation, an innovative approach that has made it attractive to high-tech companies and start-ups. Because of their relatively high liquidity and volatility, Nasdaq shares attract a wide range of investors, from institutional investors to individuals (both intraday traders and long-term investors). While Nasdaq-listed companies face unique challenges associated with rapid technological change and innovation cycles, they are generally seen as offering significant growth and valuation opportunities in return. To finance the development of their solutions and reach maturity, Nasdaq-listed companies can sometimes take several years. Once critical mass has been reached and profitability is the order of the day, however, these companies may be able to benefit from high barriers to entry and strong profitability (notably due to the scalable nature of the technology and possible network effects).
